But SEB Server works only with supported exam systems/LMS (currently Open edX, OpenOLAT, Ans, and partially Moodle).Remote note: SEB cannot provide a completely secure exam environment for remote learning. If there are no exams scheduled, students can quit SEB without quit password. When students start SEB, it connects to the SEB Server instance configured in client settings and it displays a list of currently scheduled exams. The exam configs for each exam contain a quit password, so when students start such an exam (using the sebs:// links placed on the portal/landing page), SEB runs in its secure mode.Ī third option is to use SEB Server, which has many advantages for managing and monitoring exams. As the client config doesn't contain a quit password, students can quit SEB if they started it accidentally. Then it's no problem if students start SEB, as long as that portal/landing page or LMS/exam system doesn't display links for exams if there is none scheduled (or you protect each SEB exam config with an individual settings password, which you only communicate when students are supposed to start the exam). The other recommended option is to use an SEB client config without quit password, which displays some portal/landing page (or the start page of an exam system/LMS with such an above mentioned SEB integration). Some LMS or exam systems (like for example Moodle, Inspera Assessment and others) have an SEB integration built-in, which automatically generates SEB config files for each exam and presents users a "Launch Safe Exam Browser" or similar button (which contains such an sebs:// link, which then triggers the regular web browser to start SEB). Also macOS itself restarts the app which was running before the force shutdown/restart, which many SEB users appreciate as an additional security feature (and I'm not sure if there's a way to prevent it).īut you can easily prevent such support issues by changing the way how you start exams in SEB: We recommend to either not use any client configuration in SEB at all and start all exams with an sebs:// Link to an exam config (saved with the option "for starting an exam", see Config File pane in Preferences/SEB Configuration Tool) file from the users' regular web browsers. Some exam systems/LMS allow to re-enter a previously started exam, so students could force-restart their Mac, research answers/communicate with others and re-enter the exam easily. The red lock screen is an important security feature which was requested by many of our users. We would like to prevent having the IT department unlock every MacBook at the beginning of a test. However, when the student later has to make a test and opens SEB, the lock screen returns. Booting in Safe Mode prevents the lock and lets the students use their computer again. (Which is troublesome for some students, not everyone understands how to do this). ![]() We found a way to circumvent the red lock screen by letting students boot in Safe Mode after forcing their computer to shut down using the power button. If there is a way to stop this from happening I would greatly appreciate that! But instead the MacBook restarts SEB after turning on again, which results in the red lock screen. ![]() ![]() The expected behaviour is that after turning the computer on again, they can continue using their MacBook. This means that they have to force their computer to turn off by holding the power button for ~20 seconds (just like Windows). When students accidentally open SEB without making a test they do not get a quit link because there is no test to finish. We use Safe Exam Browser (3.0 for Mac) with Moodle 3.11. (I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature, but if it is a feature I would really like to know how to circumvent this)Īt our school students have both Windows and MacBook laptops of their own (BYOD). ![]()
